Home Remedies for Bloodshot Eyes, Natural Remedies

Bloodshot eyes are a condition in which the white portion of the eyes become blood red in color due to the enlargement of the blood vessels. Irritation is its main cause and may occur due to various reasons like eyestrain, infection, allergic reaction, coughing, trauma, foreign body, dry air, excessive exposure in the sun, dust, fatigue, consumption of alcohol, high blood pressure and due to lack of vitamins B2 and B6. It can also be due to conjunctivitis, corneal ulcers - viral infection on the outer covering of the eye, uveitis - an autoimmune disorder in which there is inflammation of the uvea due to exposure to toxins and blepharitis - which is caused by skin bacteria. And there are home remedies for bloodshot eyes accordingly.

You have to splash cold water on closed eyes in order to get a cool and soothing feeling. This helps in shrinking the blood vessels. This is very helpful to treat allergic reactions. One of the other home remedies for bloodshot eyes is using a cold compress by making an ice pack by wrapping it in a towel and placing it on your eyes. If the bloodshot eyes are caused due to tiredness or fatigue, there is no itching; it is then that you can apply a warm compress.

You can take cold and hot compress on your eyes alternatively. Applying 2-3 drops of rose water is quite effective too. One of the home remedies for bloodshot eye is to make a solution with rose water, aloe vera and milk, then soak a cotton pad in it and place it on your eyes. You will get best results out of it if you can rest with the cotton pad in a room that has dim light. This will help in reducing the redness.

You have to stay away from all allergy causing agents in order to protect your eyes. One of the most useful home remedies for bloodshot eyes is to eat 2 ripe tomatoes. You have to eat the tomatoes on an empty stomach everyday in the morning. Tomatoes are rich in vitamin C and flavonoids that help in strengthening the walls of the blood vessels. You can apply thin pieces of a peeled potato on your eyes. This gives a cooling effect and is very soothing.

Goldenseal is one of the most helpful home remedies for bloodshot eyes. You can make a compress of it and apply it on your eyes. You can also make a wash out of it. The berberine in goldenseal is very effective in compressing the blood vessels and reducing the redness of the eyes. If you wear contact lenses, then use the preservative - free variety as this helps in reducing the cause of any type of infection. You can also use the preservative-free artificial tears to soothe your eyes. Include vitamins A and B along with milk and fresh fruits in your diet. Avoid touching or rubbing your eyes frequently. Maintaining a good hygiene is very important for the well being of your eyes.
